Environment & Sustainability

Care and respect for the environment and communities in which we operate is a core value of the Company.

The Company has just released its second Annual Environmental Annual Report which presents our progress and activities for 2013 in line with the commitments and conditions of the Environmental and Social Assessments (ESAs).

The report can be viewed here: Environmental Annual Report

Following progress made in 2013, a number of achievements have already been made in 2014. Highlights include Congo Iron receiving an extension of its Certificate of Environmental Conformity for the Nabeba Project. The Certificate was received in August 2012 following the approval of the ESA by the Congolese Government and subsequently renewed in August 2014 by the Congolese Minister of Tourism and Environment for an additional three years to 2017.

The Cameroon ESA Certificate of Environmental Conformity was also validated by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MINEPDD) in Cameroon in August 2014. This document is reviewed annually by the Ministry and confirms Cam Iron’s operations are in compliance with the Environmental and Social Management Plans.

Another highlight is the continued successful implementation of the Health, Safety, Environment, Community and Security (HSECS) Management System based on the Company’s Vision and Values and Policies, and the Cameroon and Congo ESAs. The HSECS Management System and ESAs are together guided by ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 Standards. Sundance has integrated the internationally-recognised standards below or their equivalent to ensure the Mbalam-Nabeba Iron Ore Project is designed, constructed, commissioned and operated safely.

  • OHSAS 18001
  • ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System – Requirements with guidance for use
  • ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Systems – Requirements
  • ISO 31000:2009 Risk Management - Principles and guidelines
  • ISO/IEC 31010:2009 Risk Management - Risk assessment techniques
  • ISO/IEC 17021:2011 Conformity Assessment - Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems

The HSECS Management System is governed by Policies that are underpinned by a series of management and essential performance standards set within a document framework. These standards set the mandatory requirement for the management of HSECS within all phases and areas of the Project from construction through to operations and decommissioning.

In addition to the international standards outlined above, and in keeping with Sundance’s commitment to sustainable development, Sundance recognises the importance of the Equator Principles and the IFC Performance Standards in governing Project activities. The Company’s Environmental and Social Policy commits the Project to Sustainability and Capacity Building, which will make our vision of "Leaving behind a better future for the next generations” a reality.
